Aeros, otherwise known as Proxima Centauri B or Proxima B, is a temperate E-Class planet and the only natural world orbiting Proxima Centauri. It is also the nominal capital of the Federations of United Star Systems.
Aeros was discovered initially in 2013 by Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire from archival observation data. To confirm the possible discovery, the European Southern Observatory launched the Pale Red Dot project in January 2016. On 24 August 2016 the team of 31 scientists from all around the world, led by Guillem Anglada-Escudé of Queen Mary University of London, confirmed the existence of Proxima Centauri B through their research, published in a peer-reviewed article in Nature.
The lack of a dust cloud around Aeros' parent star has led some astrophysicists to believe that Aeros is a captured planet. However, others believe that Aeros formed naturally from a now vanished stellar disc.
Whatever the case is, the planet has been shown to be just over four billion years old. The lack of any asteroids has kept this world from suffering any massive impacts through its history.
Barely two years after the discovery and invention of the first warp propulsion systems in 2059 CE, humans had already begun developing it's first steps to other stars. By 2060, working probes had been sent to Proxima and returned, bearing crucial information for a manned mission to Aeros. The very first set of missions were developed primarily by SpaceX and were titled Vagi, named after the Latin root of 'wanderers'.
On December 24, 2061, Vagi I, with a 10 man crew including Cassandra Goodman, Vladimir Romanyuk and Rob Dawn, arrived in orbit of Aeros after a half year of travel. Cassandra Goodman would be the first person to walk on the surface of an extrasolar planet, and Rob Dawn would be the first to publish scientific reports on Aeros, or Proxima B.The second ship to travel to Proxima B was the Egeria which discovered evidence of past life as well as the first extrasolar life form Alienobacterium proximus. Ironically, Egeria was the first extrasolar starship constructed, but the second launched due to a massive overhaul.
Many more scientific missions continued to Proxima Centauri for the next ten years, developing a major area of scientific study, significantly increasing Humanity's understanding of the universe. With the surprising discovery that Aeros wasn't tidally locked, a colony was established near one of the larger landlocked oceans of the planet.
Upon its initial colonization in 2073, the colonists contacted Terragen who agreed to begin terraforming procedures. Massive amounts of greenhouse gasses were pumped into the atmosphere, melting the massive polar ice caps and sending the water down towards the low lying lands. Genetically engineered lichen and algae were next introduced into the new oceans and they began to pump out oxygen into the atmosphere.
At the same time, nitrogen from nearby extrasolar planets began to be transported in and let loose into the redeveloping atmosphere.
Aeros was one of the first Human worlds to join the URSS in 2100. At the time the surface population lived beneath the domed city of Cassandra's Cove (named after Cassandra Goodman, the first person to step on Aeros and one of the founding colony members) in the northern hemisphere. During humanity's initial expansion throughout the local sector of space, many colonists came and settled in the higher plains of Aeros. The domed cities formed during this time were Vird, Tatir, Jovia, Mint, Mik, Uun and Yiin. Each names were mentioned in the science fiction novel Transit to Proxima, a famous novel written in 2029 depicting Proxima as having eight planets, the living one being referred to as Aeros.
By the year 2256, terraforming of Aeros was completed. Each domed city and town destroyed their domes, letting in the fresh clean air of their new atmosphere. This began a second era of expansion across the planet. Many native Aerosians began setting up houses within the newly grown forests, while others, who had just arrived from Earth, expanded upon the cities in an effort to mimic the ever expanding megacities of Earth. This caused some conflicts between newcomers and those who now considered themselves native. The URSS sent in teams of peacekeepers to try and mediate between both sides, but the conflicts only got worse. Eventually a full out planetary civil was was declared. It ended abruptly when a nuclear device destroyed the city of Mint. Both sides came together quickly for negotiations and came up with the Mint Pact, an article declaring how much development was off limits to the inhabitants.
With the start of the Eastern Galactic Rebellions, Aeros, which had a population of just under 50 million at the time, attempted to stay out of the newly starting wars that threatened to destabilize the URSS. However, when the URSS put pressure on Aeros to militarize, the Aerosian government declared that they were seceding from the Republic and would stay unaligned. They remained unaligned until the end of the age, but did provide sanctuary to those soldiers who needed it.
Due to their independence, they had to quickly militarize in order to keep themselves protected. They mined their planet and created defense grids and orbital weapons to keep any invading forces away.
In 2991, a contingent of URSS ships entered into the star system, intent on taking control of the planet due to its strategic position near Earth. However, they were surprised by the advanced military technology in orbit. The Battle of Aeros established the planet as a military power to be reckoned with and it was left alone.
With the destruction of the URSS and the formation of the Confederacy of Humanity, the Aerosian government reached out to the newly formed interstellar government in order to establish a diplomatic tie with the new government. The representatives met on Terrasphere Alpha and negotiated to join the Confederacy, and in 3012 they succeeded Thanks to trade, the planet became one of the central trading hubs in local space, and its economy shot through the roof over the course of the next few hundred years. Its economy remained strong until 4112 when its entire stock collapsed and they experienced an economic depression. However, by 4212 they'd since regained their economic footing, albeit not as strong as it had been.
