Moúdhroneos is a heavily populated E-Class Planet in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Located near the massive Tarantula Nebula, the planet is one of the largest population centers in the non-nebulous region of space surrounded by the nebula, known as the Rigonot Expanse.
It also lends its name to the Moúdhroneos Sector, which approximately stretches 18 light-years away from the system, in which the planet is indisputably the capital.
Moúdhroneos is a combination of Moúdhros and neos (new, Greek). Moúdhros itself is a town on the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea, Earth, where the ancestors of the planet's (re)discoverer originated.
The region was first visited by Ysau explorers, native to the galaxy, in the 9th millenia. However, there were little effort from the Ysau in terms of colonization, and Ysau records for the sector went missing sometime during a war which engulfed significant portions of Ysau space. The records were not rediscovered for several millenia, when the Ysau began to expand into the regions nearing the large Tarantula Nebula, separated by the edges of the galactic center from their home planet.
Around this time, sometime in the 14th millenia , the Confederacy of Humanity had also colonized and integrated significant portions of the Large Magellanic Cloud. While both originate from opposite directions of the galactic disk, some contact began between the two. Initially peaceful and somewhat dull due to the distance, the rapid expansion of the confederacy soon became a concern to the Ysau, especially after the Confederacy assimilated multiple minor spacefaring species. In order to counter this, the Ysau intensified their colonization and their (very loosely colonized) controlled space soon approached the edges of the (also very loosely colonized) Confederate space.
Being the most massive Nebulous H II Region in the Local Group with a diameter of about 600 light-years, the Tarantula Nebula is a navigation hazard due to its higher warp-dissipation, caused by the high density of ionized particles which can cause significant damages to a vessel upon extended exposure. This also exhausts the energy of the Warp Drive much faster than normal interstellar space would, shortening the jumps achievable by an exact ship by up to 92% in the densest areas or by about 45% in a sparser region of the nebula, not including the much elevated risk of a warp-failure or meteoroid impact due to the active formation process. Hence, most spacefaring vessels would try to find a navigable route through the region which bypasses the molecular clouds. In case of the Tarantula Nebula, it hinders travel from the galactic center into the northeastern regions of the galaxy (according to the arbitrary directions established by the Confederacy).
The easiest, shortest, and safest route through the nebula, known as the Ramemse Canal, passes through a large bubble nearly 90 light-years in diameter i.e. the Rigonot Expanse, where the ion density is almmost identical with regular interstellar space. When this passage was discovered by Carolus Ramemse, he also passed through the Moúdhroneos Sector although he did not explore Moúdhroneos itself. He determined however that the warp-jumps coming from both the galactic center and the galactic northeast would most likely pass through the sector or one of the neighboring ones, and both the Ysau and the Confederacy began to explore the region thoroughly.
First human discovery of Moúdhroneos occured on the year 13897, when a Confederate survey vessel attempted to refine the routes in the Ramemse Canal. Upon discovery, the vessel entered orbit and initiated its planetary survey tools, determining a lack of multicellular life but a high potential for colonization. The first group of colonists arrived only half a year after the initial discovery.
When the word spread that the Confederacy had colonized the planet, the Ysau immediately disputed the legitimacy of Confederacy being first (following the general finders colonizers rule that applied rather universally) to discover the planet. However, the complaint was largely ignored and citizens continued flowing into the planet, establishing significant agricultural facilities both as a base for the economy and to cut down on the carbon dioxide which consisted the majority of the planet's atmosphere. After nearly a millennia of slow, semi-natural terraforming, the planet became effectively earth-like around the late 14700s. At this point, the population of the planet was approaching 250 million and growing.
Trade that grew between the Ysau and the Confederacy, along with some other smaller polities in the galaxy, fueled the growth of the planet. Being located in the main passageway to the galactic northeast and the entrepôt to the sectors and systems in the Rigonot Expanse boosted the economy of the system, and its main spaceport of Kuokunish, located on orbit of moon Kalliopi, is the the busiest spaceport in the expanse, handling about a hundred cargo cruisers and about 20 million tons of cargo daily prior to the outbreak of the War of the Decamillenial Transition. In order to obtain cheaper fuel and resources to supply the port, some of the asteroid moons are colonized with mining stations.
The war, which saw a large-scale conflict between the Ysau and the Confederacy for control over the nebula (the Tarantula Campaign) among others, was particularly intense in the navigable Ramemse Canal. Both sides recognized the massive importance of Moúdhroneos in the war (and of the Ysau-controlled Ysiplon, on the extreme end of the canal). A large amount of fighting occurred in the systems linking these two systems, separated by an uncomfortable distance of 32 ly. Through the course of the war, the Ysau launched numerous raids on Moúdhroneos and one significant offensive, although the planet continued in Confederacy hands until the Split of the Confederacy of Humanity.
When the emergency laws allowing the Confederacy to engage seceding armies were invoked, Moúdhroneos was one of the few major planets outside the Milky Way which remained loyal to the Confederacy. However, during this chaotic period, many sectors surrounding Moúdhroneos declared their independence and the Ysau annexed parts of the Tarantula Nebula, including systems consisting the canal three-quarters of the way to Moúdhroneos (the remnants also remained loyal to the Confederacy). This effectively isolated the Moúdhroneosians from the rest of the Confederacy.
After the war ended, the port of Kuokunish lost some traffic, but it remains the most important port in the region and a vital economic boost to the planet. Some of the population left the system due to the economic slowdown, or simply to leave confederate territory to join other entities in the area. Currently, the population growth of the system is stalled and the population growth from natural causes is balanced by immigration.
Geography and Planet Overview
Water bodies cover about 40% of the planet's surface, leaving some areas far from the oceans as deserts due to their lack of rainfall. Prominent mountain ranges are found in a huge chain across the equator known as the Moudrosian Bulge (separated by the great inland Solent Sea into West and East segments, and cut off by the Southwestern Pourniac Ocean). Other mountain ranges are scattered in the subtropical areas across the planet, some of which are volcanic.
Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, while comparatively rare and weak, do occur on the planet. More prominent hazards are subtropical hurricanes which arose from the planet's large axial tilt.
While being introduced species, animals and plants introduced by the Confederacy had spread well across the planet's surface after adapting to the different climate and gravity. Biomes are quite well-defined with forests and jungles close to the equatorial regions along with tundras nearer the poles.
From the microorganisms that inhabited the planet's oceans in the past, there is a significant amount of limestone caverns carved into the rocks of the planet, which are scarcely inhabited by multicellular organisms save some stray insects. Significant amounts of these remain unexplored, along with parts of the massive oceans.
Cities and population centers are concentrated around the oceans and in the massive islands separated by thin straits from the main landmass, along with the coastlines of the seas and oceans. There is also a large population living in other areas, although not as much as the former.
Being a major population center, the planet produces enough food and agricultural products to sustain itsef and some other (less-populated) systems nearby. Moúdhroneos is the second-largest producer of agricultural products in the Rigonot Expanse, and is the main producer of products such as soybean and lumber.
It also has a significant industrial basis in both light and heavy industry. However, it does not produce enough raw materials for its industries and imports significant amounts of purified metals, alloys, silicon, and the like from other systems and its moons. There is also a significant shipbuilding industry in its orbital yards, manufacturing various merchant and military vessels.
Both the imports and exports of the planet come mostly through the Kuokunish spaceport, which is the main source of economy on Kalliopi. It also provides the basis of the financial industry in the planet, which employs significant amounts of the population and services significant parts of the expanse.
The GDP per capita on the year 20300 is 13,000 C-Units, with a planetary GDP of 82.1 Trillion C-Units after including the satellites of the planet. This makes the planet the second largest economy in the expanse.
Moúdhroneos sustains its own military without a need of external help, but it does receive high-grade weaponry from the main worlds of the Confederacy of Humanity. It currently has 12,300,000 active personnel and an undisclosed amount of vessels, although it is expected to have around 10 heavy battleships and 100 star cruisers. They are equipped with standard infantry and artillery equipment, and the government at the planet can call for a conscription in case of an invasion against the planet.
