A temperate E-Class holiday world.
Older than Earth at 10.8 billion years, the ancient world of Nativia (RS 8409-2738-7-92737-312 in 9.7.4. v5) has a diameter of 13120.8 km and a gravity of 1.1 G. With a semimajor axis of 0.9 AU the planet’s local year is only 309.2 days. The planet originally had an atmospheric pressure of 0.2 but terraforming efforts made the planet more livable. It originally had a day length of 15 hours but that was slowed down to a more Earth norm during terraforming.
The planet has 5 moons, one of which is an S-Class world.
The planet has an axial tilt of 41°13’ and a mean global temperature of -21.9 °C making the seasons harsher than those of Earth. The planet experiences frequent hurricanes that produce copious amounts of snow and wind. These have become known as snowicanes.
Most of the planet is constantly covered in snow. During the terraforming process many terrestrial trees were genetically engineered and imported and planted on the slopes of the mountains, turning them into various winter wonderlands. These trees look like normal firs during the day but when night rolls around, they emit a multicolored or white bioluminescence on certain points of the trees, much like Chirstmas lights and lighting up the night.
One native animal species, the glowbugs, actually add to the Christmassy feel of Nativia as during the night they fly around, glowing multicolored as well. They seem to have taken a shine to humans and will land on one if they step outside.
Discovered in 5912 by a long range FTL probe, the planet was deemed a perfect candidate for terraforming and colonization. A group of people 2ho were enthusiastic about the Christmas holiday were one of the first to apply for colonization right from the Planetary Colonization Bureau and were granted terraforming and colonization rights.
Arriving in 5250 the long range colony awoke from stasis and began to set up a base from where they could oversee terraforming of the planet. The probe indicated that the only life forms there were small one foot trees, a grass analogue and a few wild animals and bugs. The oceans were teeming with life however.
The terraforming was over within twenty years and the genetically engineered terrestrial life had been seeded all across the planet. The colonists then began dismantling their structures and began building more traditional houses and chalets, the most famous and the oldest one being Farmer Gray’s Chalet (named after the Farmer Gray in Sleigh Ride).
With the invention of a faster Warp Drive, more colonists and tourists came to the planet, either building their own holiday resorts or just normal houses, or just enjoying their own native Christmas holiday on the themed world, as Christmas is almost universally celebrated throughout the Confederacy that each planet that celebrates it has their own day for it. The four asteroid moons were moved around in their orbits and used as anchors for the four space elevators used to ferry visitors to and from space.
Nativian culture has little to no government. Nativia does have a well-trained civilian planetary police force and a planetary GPS in case skiers get lost or to warn of incoming storms. Aside from this the technology level is relatively low tech as the original settlers wanted to preserve the ancient spirit of the winter holiday as spoken of in poems and songs. There is even a working Santa’s Village at the North Pole.
The native Nativians usually wear festive getup, red and green mostly with some blue and white mixed in as well. Nativian architecture is based mostly on ancient European snow lodges and chalets as well as other structures built for enjoyment on the slopes of Earth. Each place has a Christmas tree up and is always decorated with lights.
Thanks to the storms each house has to be reinforced heavily so that no one is harmed. While on the outside they look like they are made of wood, the wood is imported from worlds with sturdy wood and sometimes they are reinforced with high density metals. There are a couple tropical holiday resorts but those are very few and far between in number.
The current human population of Nativia has just passed 1 billion.
