The project began during the First Galactic War. Many Giokans blamed the Intergalactic Confederacy for the humans' attacks, and sought revenge by obliterating many Xcathli settlements on planets they had attempted to colonize. This reduced the Xcathli's presence from a total of 231 planets to only 25. In 9187, the Xcathli decided to find new planets to colonize. With the help of the Confederacy of Humanity and the Intergalactic Confederacy, they launched the Nebula spaceprobes into deep space. Inside each one, four Xcathli and four humans were frozen in cryogenic sleep. Nebula I was launched in 9188, and Nebulas II, III and IV followed suit.
Nebula V was launched on July 6, 9192, through a wormhole towards the distant NGC 1300 galaxy. Unfortunately, a previously undetected black hole altered the ship's course just before the wormhole's entry point. That slight error was enough to miss the wormhole entirely and fly through space, at 100,000,000 times the speed of light, for 9 years, 2 months and 3 days.
On September 9, 9201, the crew of Nebula V arrived in the Mirdecres System (later named the Orpheus System). They were immediately astounded by the incredible variety of life, something which they had never seen, and also documented a mid-Type 0 civilization they discovered were named the Klar'ik (Klar'ik for "native").
Astounded by the find, the crew of Nebula V used quantum information receptors to relay their findings back to Xcathlia. On March 29, 9210, Xcathlia's Global Senate received word of the mission's success. Immediately, they dispatched more ships, with engines capable of attaining 500,000,000C, to the distant Mirdecres System. By 9220, the first round-trip expeditions had been made.
The Intergalactic Confederacy, along with the Xcathlian Senate, realized that they needed a faster way to transport resources. At the current rate, a round-trip flight took 8 years, 2 months and 3 days, making trade between Xcathlia and the Klar'ik a very tedious process. On March 17, 9224, Hart Monroe of the Intergalactic Confederacy proposed creating a wormhole between Xcathlia and the Mirdecres System. The vote was conducted by the Confederacy, and the results were clear: of the 268 in the Confederacy, 217 supported the idea.
A newly discovered star, Orpheus, the second-largest star ever discovered, was chosen to be sacrificed. Between 9225 and 9230, the star's energy was harnessed and the wormhole was constructed. Between 9229 and 9230, the crew of the Nebula V constructed the other end of the wormhole. Finally, after 5 years of work, the wormhole was first activated on January 2, 9231. The Confederacy tested it, and within 16 hours, the test subjects came back. Immediately, the Confederacy sent ship after ship through the wormhole, delivering supplies to the Mirdecres System. The first Confederacy outpost, named Starspire City, was established in 9237. The name of the system was changed to the Orpheus System on November 3, 9278, in honour of the star that was sacrificed to colonize it.
Today, the Orpheus System, notably Klar'ik'ii (homeworld of the Klar'ik) contains approximately 5.7 billion inhabitants, distributed between Klar'ik'ii (with 2.5 billion), Caraneus, first moon of Klar'ik'ii (with 2 billion), and Persephone, second moon of Klar'ik'ii (with 1.2 billion). The system is a part of the Confederacy, and trade is common between the planets. The Xcathli have colonized 186 new worlds in the Orpheus area, and have once again become a great galactic powerhouse.
