Vorstell (RS 8409-1353-9-94748248-889 B4 in 0.974p7) is an E-Class Planet orbiting the L0 Brown Dwarf Xaoin in the Ashreq-Xaoin Binary System about 74 light-years away from Sol. It is home to the human colony of Antres.

Vorstell lies 0.075-0.083 AU (11.2-12.4 million km) from its parent star. It has a moderately eccentric orbit with e = 0.099. Its rotation and revolution period is 32.627 Earth Days.

Physical Properties

With about 10% the mass of Earth and 48% its diameter, Vorstell has 45% its surface gravity, allowing human activity to run semi-normally without artificial gravity.

Tidally locked to its parent star, Vorstell is covered with ice sheets on its night side while the day side holds a medium-sized liquid ocean. A high-carbon dioxide atmosphere causes sufficient greenhouse effect to keep the temperature at 13.7oC, but forcing colonists to stay under CO2-to-O2 converting biodomes.

It has two dwarf moons, named Lantsza and Cenault by the colonists. Astronomers estimate its age to be 5.41±0.05 billion years.

Vorstell have been inhabited by native marine animals and plants (marine and terrestrial) prior to the arrival of human colonists. Terrestrial animals are somewhat scarce and limited in size due to a low concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere. Massive forests cover the landmass however, allowing local concentrations of oxygen for these areas. In the day side these resemble the biosphere of Earth's temperate tundras. Nearing the ice sheet boundary the ecosystem rapidly changes, drawing a closer similarity to Earth's Siberia.

Marine life is plentiful, especially near the ice sheet. This proves to be a major source of calories and income for both native animals and the human colony.

A joint Chinese-German exploration venture led by Otto Einrich and Yun Tu-Huang was the first humans to arrive in the system at August 2418. Three ships, carrying 15,000 colonists, went to the larger red dwarf star of Ashreq and went on to establish the science outpost of Shenmetu. The fourth ship in the expedition traversed towards the Brown Dwarf, seen as less likely to hold life, and discovered Vorstell. The biodome setup was complete by October, and most of the initial colonists in the expedition moved to Vorstell save for several dozen staying in the outpost.

By the year 2680, Vorstell has a total population of 1,172,500, with about 500,000 living in the main bio-dome of Antres and the rest in smaller biodomes.

A movement founded in 3558 after the successes of terraforming in Sol have tried to persuade the FUSS to terraform Vorstell, or at least its atmosphere.

Like many other colonies, Vorstell's economy relies on mining and fishing.

Antres was founded near a large deposit of Ilmenite-Aeschynite ores, which remains the main source of exports.

Industry is limited to ore and fishery processing with some deuterium-producing and fusion power plants operational throughout the major bio-domes. The majority of the population uses geothermal energy as a power source.

Agriculture is limited to local consumption due to the lack of natural sunlight. Most non-marine foods are produced under biodomes. Vorstell is a net importer of organic substances despite its rich fisheries. It also imports mining equipment and machinery in large quantities to support its economy.
